Course Content

The course will provide an introduction to the lives of adults with learning disabilities (age 16+). It is estimated that 1-2% of people in England have such a disability. Some play a full part in their communities and the church. Others may feel isolated and marginalised. In the first session, on being part of the local community, opportunities for adults with learning disabilities will be explored, the contributions they make and the barriers they experience in their everyday lives.

In the second session, on being part of the church community, research about meeting the spiritual and religious needs of people with learning disabilities, will be looked at.

Focus will then be put on the contributions some people with learning disabilities make to their church communities, the difficulties they may experience and the support they need.

During the day there will be contributions from people with learning disabilities, family members and professionals who work closely with them.

There will be opportunities for discussion in groups in both sessions.

Who is it for?

The course is for anyone who would like to

  • Have a greater understanding of the lives of adults with learning disabilities
  • Engage and link with people with learning disabilities and their families in their local community and/or the church.
